Formal, Informal and Enviromental

7. You will need to be able to explain the three types of portraits we talked about - formal, informal and environmental.
On your blog describe all three.

Formal - like an arranged pose, it's set up.
Informal- the exact opposite, no posing, or anything, it's a normal photo.
Environmental-  like a photo where a person works or lives, like on location.

Manipulating Photos

6. You will need to know and be able to explain the ethics of manipulating photos in photoshop and what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.
On your blog tell me what is acceptable and what isn't.

What's acceptable-
Maybe a little light changing, or making the photo brighter, or cropping, or adding text.
 or a border.

What's NOT acceptable-
Making the eyes bigger, changing something entirely for example like turning someones hair dark when there blonde, or making the nose bigger than what it is.

Folder to Server

You go to server__drives until the little box pops up, the you go to computer, and from there on the left side column it should say "j-students" and you go to photojournalism, then eight period, and find your name and you're there.

Aperture, Shutter, and ISO

3.You will need to know and understand Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO.

Aperture- is the opening that determines the angle of a bundle of rays/
ISO- the higher the aperture, the clearer.
Shutter Speed- exposure time

Rules of Photography (what they mean)

Rule of Thirds-  you like position the most important part of your picture in one of these 9 different squares.

Balancing Elements- to balance out you photo with something else, so it's just not one thing.

Leading Lines-  a line can kind of take you to the main focus of the picture

Symmetry & Patterns- since you're so focused on the symmetry, it could make tension?

Viewpoint- Like different points on where you can take it from, from high above,or floor level.

Background- a all solid background to me is the best choice, because it doesn't take the attention away from the main thing.

Depth- Like including things way way back, or close, it makes the picture look like it keeps going.

Framing- when yuo use two other objects that frame both sides of the photo.

Cropping- when you take out unnecessary things from a photo.

Merger-s like if you cut part of someones leg off, or face from the photo, it's not a complete photo.

Photo & Caption

In this photo, Many people came together to hear about the case with Dr. Conrad Murray's which were he was pleaded guilty of manslaughter to Pop star Michael Jackson.

Lytro Warm Up

1. What did you see happen when you clicked on the photo?
It would focus on whatever part I'd pick.

2. How does this new camera work?
It focuses where you want it to.

3. What do you think a photographer would have to know about to take this kind of photo (remember its a point-and-shoot, so its full manual mode, what do you need to know about)
F-Stop, Aperture, and ISO, and where and in what lighting to take it.

4. Is it worth the money?
I think so, that's really cool to do, because sometimes cameras won't focuse every well on the exact thing you want it to focus on.

Shortlist

Landscape-
I like this one, because I would say it shows depth, and it's really nice picture, it's detailed and all.

Travel-
This is so different, because we don't see this at our regular barber shop, it shows that the place is different like somewhere where fishing is done by many?

Wildlife-
You can obviously tell that this mother loves her child by the way she hold him, this picture shows that by just looking at it.

Fashion-
You can tell that the dress catches attention, well it caught mine, it's a nice photo.

Family and Friends-
This picture shows a family just having some fun, and those are the greatest pictures to see, of fun and happiness.

Creative License-
I didn't really understand what "creative license" means, but this is a really cool picture, I would like to make something like this.

Documentary-
I like this picture, it's a picture of kids at school, and it's just a nice picture.

Gardens and Plants-
I like how the took it from  the reflection of this pond, it's really cool, it came out clear, and the dirtyness of the water gave it some kind of cool effect.

Portraits-
This shows almost all the new rules we read about, and the background really works with this picture, you obviously know what to look at.

Action and Movement-
This shows action obviously, and I just like how it's blurred to show that they were moving at a fast speed.

Portrait Assignment

who will you shoot, where will you shoot, and what will you do to make the shot successful?

I'm going to shoot myself, because I would feel more comfortable with it, and I know how I'm going to want the shoot to go like, and it would be my Idea, so I'll have more of a clue on how to start.
Where? I'm thinking inside, it won't be outdoors, most likely in my room, I have a big window and I like how the light hits, so that's most likely where.. To make my shoot successful, I'm going to take the tips I read today, and really put it to work, to have fun with it, and see what expressions would work with, and really have fun with it, over-react and see where I go with that.

Casual Portrait

- T o me, I'm all about detail, the picture doesn't necessarily need to be of a pretty person, or something nice, but detail, I mean this picture, you can see freckles, mustache, the hair color, it's just goes way deep in on detail, and really shows it.

- I like how the leaves which were blurred, made it focus on them, and it's just a simple nice picture.

Photography Self Portrait

 - This picture, I like how they turned the background black and white, which makes me immediately look at the color, which is where you see her taking the picture, of what she sees.

- I really like self portrait pictures like this, of a person, of themselves, to me it's just nice, it's interesting, because a lot of people are camera-shy and I love when pictures like these come out, I like how it's faded and old looking at the bottom, to make it seem like an old photograph.

Enviromental Portrait

- What I really liked about this photo was, the setting, I mean it's beautiful, and the picture is clear, and you see detail, and you can tell the guy was what they were aiming for, he also stand out with the red jacket, but I really liked the setting mostly on this one.

- I really liked this photo, the sky in the back is just wow, it's so detailed!  It's an awesome picture, you can see everything so clearly, and you can see every little thing. I love this picture.

Self Portrait and Portraits Part 2 (TIPS)

1 - Think about your motivation and emotions: Blankly staring at the camera rarely gets good results. Be silly, don’t be afraid to over-act. The worst that can happen is that you fill up your memory card with useless photos; but you might also find yourself with a proper gold-nugget of a self portrait.

-This would be for me my first pick tip, because a great picture could come out of that, never to be shy in front of the camera.

2 - Have fun with it. Be sexy. Be yourself. Be awesome. Be different. Be creative. Whatever you do, have fun with it. That’s part of the point, after all.

3. Get Closer
-The most common mistake made by photographers is that they are not physically close enough to their subjects. In some cases this means that the center of interest—the subject—is just a speck, too small to have any impact. Even when it is big enough to be decipherable, it usually carries little meaning. Viewers can sense when a subject is small because it was supposed to be and when it's small because the photographer was too shy to get close.

Self Portraits

On your blog - post your favorite self-portrait (1 photo)

and your favorite professional portrait (1 photo).

Explain what YOU think makes a good photo (3-5 sentences please). Be specific. And then describe which style you think you will want to do when you have a camera in your hands again.

Up close and personal, makes a good photo, the detail in it, the emotion, what it means to you, I'm going to want to do photos like the first one I have on here, like of beauty.

Ethics in Fashion Photography

1. List the changes that were made to the model's face in the computer. (Look carefully)
- Eyes were lifted, head was lifted to make her neck look longer, made her look skinnier from the face, and her eyes were made bigger.

2. Is it ethically acceptable to change a person's appearance like this in a photo? Why or why not?
- no, it's not because it's like fake advertising.

3. Are there circumstances in which it would be more ethically wrong to do this type of manipulation?
- no.

4. What types of changes are OK, and what aren't?
- they were all bad, they should of not have changed a thing, they may look bad normally, but it's still no excuse.

5. Explain what you think the differences are between fashion photography and photojournalism.

- well, it wouldn't be a huge difference, I mean isn't photography about anything? just fashion photography focuses n photography.

6. What relationship does each type of photography have to reality, and how does this affect the ethical practice of each?
- I don't know, I guess a photo could really explain something. It shows the beauty of it?

Ethical and Unethical

A. Post the manipulation that you think was the most unethical, and explain why you think it was unethical. If you do not know what the word ethic or unethical means, look them up on the internet. It is very important you know what those two words mean.

I say this is the most unethical because I mean come-on, it's obviously not Oprah's body, even I knew and I don't even know that much about Oprah.

B. Post the manipulation that you consider the least unethical, and explain why you think it is not as bad as others.  I couldn't really tell what was wrong with this one. It looked the same just darker.

Photo Manupulation and Ethics

A. Summarize the main points of the story in 1-4 sentences.
The story is mainly about how Photoshopping is bad, and either distorts or ruins the photo, and just shows things that aren't true by adding or taking away something from the original picture.

B. Explain why you think this type of photo editing is unethical or acceptable.

it's unethical because it just ruins the picture, it's like it's showing you a bunch of lies, but in picture form.

Warm-Up

This has to be my favorite photo because I mean, there's no words to explain this, it's a perfect picture, what caught my attention was the eye, but then I looked in and saw that it was showing what the eye was looking at, and it's really cool, I would love to learn how to take a picture like that some day.

I would simply just shoot a photo of a time when someone had true happiness.

National Geographic

1.     I would've liked to visit Prypiat, Ukraine because the pictures I see now of how old and beat-up it is and rusty, it makes me actually want to go and see it, and see how it use to look from when it did work.

2.

3. Under a bridge where hobos stay at.
- An abandoned church
-A locker room
-the beach
-an abandoned hotel

4. Use google or another search engine to research ONE of your five places and see if anyone has already started documenting that place. If you find that someone has already started - post at least one photo of their work

.

5. I would want to take pictures under a bridge where hobos are because it'd be ool to see the other side of life on how people live.

6. A camera, myself, and a partner.
but to stay for a while and actually follow and see how, would be food, money, and sleeping gear, and clothes, all the essentials.

Video Questions

A. How do these other features enhance the photographs?
Well?

B. In what ways are videos better than photographs? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
Well, from the video "1st & 2nd Days" you can actually feel the emotion, they had through each picture, they explained it, as if it was a story.

C. In what ways are photos better than videos? Provide an example from the Denver Post Web site.
Well a photo can mean a thousand words, but these photos were really precise on what they wanted you to notice and learn from them.

Captions Soldier

In this photo, Frank Hiffersman is giving out orders to the troops.

Fisher, here looking at old letters from his friends and family giving their blessings to him.

Here, Fisher is taking time off, to just browse the internet.

A. For the photos in which Ian is the main subject of the photos, in what tense are the verbs usually written?  They're usually written in present tense form.

B. How do the captions enhance the photographs?

They tell you something you yourself didn't notice, or didn't know about.

Soldier Q's

. What is the most powerful image from the slideshows? Why?
The one where the soldiers are writing to their families, and it just shows how much it would feel to miss your family.

B. What sequence of photographs is the most powerful? Why?
In the Army; because there training really hard, I couldn't be able to do any of that, it shows all of there hard work.

c. How do the images work together to tell a story?
They go by how it's supposed, how they are before they go, during the army, on breaks, training, then there first assignments, and when they come home. I have a cousin who's actually in the marines, and all these pictures look almost exactly and tell the same story he has.

Funny Caption #3

I always come home asking my mom "Hey! What's for dinner?" I don't think we'll have that problem anymore.

Funny Caption #2

In this photo there "boxing", when I think of boxing, I think fists, hands, and having to do with people's faces, not actual boxes -______-.

Funny Caption #1

In this photo I found it really funny because when ever I see a rainbow it's like the prettiest thing I see at the moment, but I've never really thought where a rainbow ends . . I know now -__-.

Mural

1. What theme that we could take here at school could we do a series of these panels to place around the school?  Different people's styles?

2. Should we use phones only, or should we open it up to our regular cameras for those people that don't have camera phones? I think regular cameras, would be better.

3. Where would you want to put the mural on campus?

Somewhere everyone can see, like the wall when you walk right up the stairs, it's the first thing you would see.

Our next assignments will be to shoot the class-decided theme and to create a mural like this - each class will have its own and we will print them here in this room. We will take a collection to buy a mount board and some paint to make it the color we decide will be best. I would like to use phones and instagram only, but I am open to each class deciding what to shoot and how to display it. We will take all the photos and I will help print them here in class. We will do this again, especially once we learn more about photoshop, so your art will be up around the school all year, with your name under the photo, so take it seriously!!!

Warm Up

1. What do you have to do on the camera to make this type of photo?
You have to change the ISO, f-stop, and shutter speed.
2. Look up a Canon T3 on google and tell me if it has the ability to shoot bracketed photos?
Yes, it can.
3. Is there a place on campus we could take a series of photos like this?
mostly outside.

4. Do a google image search for HDR photos and find your favorite, post it on your blog, tell me why

Simplicty, Balance, the focus on this photo is really good, really clear, and it's a nice photo.

Black and White Photagraphers Part 3

1.) What first caught your eye while looking at your photographers photos? Is there something in particular about their photos that made you want to choose them? They were just really nice and detailed, pretty.

2.) Look at those 2 photos you posted last time. Use your five senses to tell me more about those photos. Answer them on your blog.

I see - A lot of detail in these pictures, It's really pretty, It shows how much effort he really put into his photos, I see texture, balance, It's a perfect picture.

I smell - If I could, the trees, the grass, I smell burnt grass? I also smell the "outside smell" which smells really bad, I can smell the lions? they don't smell good.

I hear- the wind coming through, passing by the grass, it's kind of a strong wind, it passes through the lions fur, moving the dirt.

I taste- the water? haha, the dirt?

I feel- the soft grass, the trees leafs, I can feel the lions soft fur, and the tough dirt.

Fixed Photo Shoot Picture

Fixed Photo Shoot Reflection

1. What did you learn about the camera when you took these photos?
That Aperture and Shutter Speed change everything.

Look at the photos you took, they are located here:
Jstudents > (your period) > TRIAL PRACTICE SHOOT > (folder with your name on it).
Make sure you view the photos as Extra Large Icons to see them fully.

2. What do you notice about all the photos and the way they look?
they change from bright to normal then to dark.

3. Can you tell the difference between each ISO? Explain how.
A bit, it just gets more and more focused.

Sim-Cam

- f 4 looks best at 1/60 seconds, and the background is rarely visible.

- f 5.6 looks best at 1/125 seconds, and the background is kind of visible, not close to being clear though.

- f 8 looks best at 1/60 seconds, and the background is a little more visible now.

- f 11 looks best at 1/60 seconds, and the background is better, you can actually tell
what the background is.

- f 16 looks best at 1/30 seconds is just a little blurry, but you can tell what the background is.

- f 22 looks best at 1/15 seconds, and you can see the background clearly.

What is happening to the people themselves at slow Shutter Speeds? What could the photographer do to help combat this problem? What is the lowest Shutter Speed do you think a photographer can hand-hold the camera?

At slow shutter speeds, the picture either gets really blurry, to a point where you can't tell what it is, or it's just really bright. I think the lowest shutter speed that a photographer can use when hand-holding the camera would be f 5.6 or f 8. To fix the problem I think you could just change the shutter speeds.

ISO

1. What are the advantages of shoot at a higher ISO at a sporting event like basketball or a night football game? It's really clear, and it comes out in better lighting.
2. What suggestions did the author make about using a low ISO? the lower the ISO, the less sensitivity.
3. What suggestions did the author make about using a high ISO? the higher the ISO, the more sensitive the camera.
4. At the camera near you, please tell me what ISO's are available on your camera?
100, 200, 400, 800, 1600

ISO 200

ISO 3200

ISO 6400

Shutter Speed

1. If you were assigned to shoot at Blue and Gold night, which will be next month, what shutter speeds do you think you would have to shoot at the following events that night I would like you to answer the question for the following two situations:

At the beginning while the sun is still partially up and the courtyard has reasonable light
a.) the dunking booth - 1/2000 of a second
b.) the food eating contest - 1/250 of a second
c.) the rock climbing wall - 1/250 of a second
d.) someone working at a booth - 5 second exposure
e.) the DJ/MC working at the middle of the circle -  1/250 of a second
f.) the Diamonds performance. -  1/1600 of a second

Towards the end when there is no sun and has gotten dark enough that you can't see from one end of the courtyard to the other.
a.) the dunking booth - 1/2000 of a second
b.) the food eating contest - 1/1600 of a second
c.) the rock climbing wall - 1/1600 of a second
d.) someone working at a booth - 1/250 of a second
f.) the Diamonds performance. 1/2000 of a second

2. List the three settings your camera has regarding setting shutter speed (these are found at #5 on the Shutter Speed website. Explain how each works - DO NOT COPY AND PASTE, use your own words.

Auto-  the computer sets it for you.
Aperture Priority- you just set the aperture, while the camera sets the shutter speed.
Manual- when you set the aperture and shutter speed by yourself without the camera doing it for you.

3. With the camera near you, what are the shutter speeds available to you on that camera? You will have to turn the camera on to determine this - hopefully you can figure out what setting to put the camera on to determine the answer to this question.

30'' 25'' 20'' 15'' 13'', 10'' 8'' 6'' 5'' 4'' 3'' 2'' 1'' 6, 1"3, 1"0"8, 0"6, 0"5, 0"4, 0"3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10, 1/13, 1/15, 1/20, 1/25, 1/30, 1/40, 1/50, 1/60, 1/80, 1/100. 1/125, 1/160, 1/200, 1/250. 1/320, 1/400, 1/500, 1/640, 1/800, 1/1000, 1/1250, 1/1600, 1/2000, 1/2500, 1/3200, 1/4000.

Aperture

1. What part of the body should we closely relate aperture? to the eye.
2. Finish this sentence - the smaller the Aperture, the larger the f-stop, the higher the Aperture, the smaller the f-stop.
3. In your own words tell me how aperture impacts Depth of Field? The size of the Aperture affects the picture in a big way, like a small aperture makes the background completely blurry, but a larger aperture doesn't really do much.
4. With the camera near you - tell me the F stops available on the lens currently attached.

F4.5, F5.0, F5.6, F6.3, F7.1, F8.0, F9.0, F10, F11, F12, F13, F14, F15, F16, F17, F18, F19, F20, F21, F22, F23, F24, F25, F26, F27, F28, F29.

Black and White Powerpoint Review

The photos were really pretty, and really detailed, it almost looks like they were drawn.
My favorite photo was where the Lion and his "girl" were cuddling or snuggling together, it was so cute!

Nick Brandt

a.     What kind of camera did he use?
"He photographs on medium-format black and white film without telephoto or zoom lenses."
 b.     What is his reason for taking the photos?
"It was while directing “Earth Song”, a music video for Jackson in Tanzania, in 1995 that Brandt fell in love with the animals and land of East Africa. Over the next few years, frustrated that he could not capture on film his feelings about and love for animals, he realized there was a way to achieve this through photography, in a way that he felt no-one had really done before."
c.     What is his hope by taking these types of photos?
"One of his goals being to record a visually poetic last testament to the wild animals and places there before they are gone at the hands of man."
d.     Find something he has to say about Africa and post the quote on your blog

Academic Shoot Reflection

1. What challenges did you encounter while trying to get the photos following the rules I set out for you? I couldn't find a framing picture.

2. What technical aspects of photography or the assignment in general (focus, framing, holding the camera, etc.) did you find yourself thinking about the most? Provide a specific example of what you did to do this correctly. I was holding the camera well, and almost none of my pictures were blurry!

3. If you could do the assignment again, what would you do differently now that you know some basic rules of photography?  I would look for better examples.

4. What things would you do the same?
The focus, and holding of the camera.

5. When you go out with your next set of prompts, which rule do you think will be the easiest to achieve?
Rule of Thirds.

6. Which rule do you think will be the hardest to capture?
Well for me it would be Framing.

7. What rule are you still not totally clear on and what can you do to figure out what that rule is?
I'm familiar with most of them, but if I didn't know, I'd go back to the composition website and read on them again.

Framing

:(

I didn't find a framing picture.

Lines

It wasn't as good, but the blinds show the lines in this photo.
The subject is/are the blinds.

I think it's kind of clear what the subject is, I think they would first notice the people.

I would have found a completely different example for Lines.

Merger

I like this one, I think it clearly shows what a merger is, on the left you can see that the girl was cut in half, and right in front, it's hard to notice but the guys body looks like a part of the girls body.
The subject is the two people in the front of the picture, and the girl in the left, cut in half.

I think so, if you really look.

Nothing different really.

Balance

It wasn't my best, but the two boys balance each other out, they were matching.
The subject is the two boys in the picture.

Yes, I think you can tell what the subject is.
I would have taken it from a different angle.
